Anchor Press Limited (Anchor Print) is a commercial printing company based in Nelson, NZ. Our principal product is high quality corporate printing, full colour promotional and information literature for many local and regional companies. Our services cover pre-press (print preparation), printing (lithographic and digital), through to print finishing.

Through our activities, products and services, we recognise that we have many different impacts on the environment. We are committed to continual improvement in our environmental performance and in the prevention of pollution.

We are committed to selecting our suppliers, inclusive of an assessment of their environmental practices as part of the selection process, and we will continue to support our customers in reducing their environmental impact.

We will ensure that resources are available to enable us to achieve our objectives and targets.

Our objectives are:

  • Reduce energy required in our operations
  • Reduce the use of water and release of water pollutants from production operations
  • Reduce the depletion of resources (raw) materials
  • Reduce the release of air pollutants into the environment

Glossary of Terms

Bleaching - Bleaching method using chlorine or other chemicals to whiten the colour of the woodpulp used in papermaking.

ECF - (Elemental Chlorine Free) Woodpulps bleached without the use of chlorine gas, a product found to cause toxins in pulp mill effluents.

EMS - (Environmental Management Systems) An internal system for handling environmental systems within a company. It sets requirements for how activities impacting on the environment are accounted for and documented. Generally these are audited by outside agencies (such as the ISO 14001 and EMAS management systems).

EMAS - (European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) founded by the EU and considered to be the superior environmental standard available. The core scheme requires full transparent public reporting, monitoring and auditing. Accreditation will only be maintained by an organisation that proves annual ongoing environmental improvements.

FSC - (Forest Stewardship Council) An international non-governmental organisation which promotes responsible and sustainable forest management. FSC is the only eco label endorsed by WWF, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the Woodland Trust.

Oxygen Bleaching - A process in which oxygen is used to facilitate a reduction in other bleaching compounds.

Peroxide Bleaching - Method of bleaching woodpulp with hydrogen peroxide. Used in conjunction with other non-chlorine bleaching compounds, it reduces or avoids the need for chlorine dioxide in final bleaching.

TCF - (Totally Chlorine Free) Paper made from woopulps bleached without the use of chlorine chemicals. Ie no chlorine gas or chlorine dioxide).

WMF - (Well Managed Forest) Forests that are certified and audited to ensure they comply with environmentally sustainable practice and principles. Tropical hardwood and softwood trees are now grown in well managed forests.

ISO 14001 - Applies to those environmental aspects which the organization has control and over which it can be expected to have an influence. This standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to implement, maintain and improve an environmental management system; assure itself of its conformance; with its own stated environmental policy (those policy commitments of course must be made); demonstrate conformance; ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations; seek certification of its environmental management system by an external third party organization; make a self-determination of conformance.
